Well, my month-long vacation is finally over, and I’ve been back in the lab for a week now. Even though it is in fact work, it’s actually kind of nice. I completely dismantled my test cryostat this week over some protestations from other projects that had been using it in my absence, only to have them subsequently get really excited about the idea of the cryostat finally getting upgraded after all these years of having to use it in a functional-but-not-awesome state. When it’s done (approximately forever from now) it will be really sweet. We’ll be able to read out 160 channels at a time and do optical tests on detectors. Oh yeah! Don’t worry though, I’m not just doing work. Yesterday I went sea kayaking in Half Moon Bay and then attended a Pi Day party that featured at least 5 kinds of delicious pie.
I’ve been staying with Martin (from lab) and Sirena (his fiance) for the last 1.5 weeks, and as fun as it is I’m pretty happy to be moving into my own place tomorrow. I’m sure they will be glad to get their living room back as well. The only problem with moving into a new place on a Monday is that I won’t have time to actually get a mattress to sleep on until the weekend. I guess that’s why I own a therma-rest and sleeping bag.
Oh yeah, it turns out that Berkeley’s spring break is sometime nowish, which I didn’t have a clue about. Now I understand why all the grad students in lab got so confused when we all disappeared for a week every spring.
