Inauguration day came and went here at the South Pole without too much excitement. Mostly this was because at the time of the inauguration it was 5am here and the satellite had nowhere near enough bandwidth for us to watch. However, today we got a DVD from McMurdo with 6 hours of inauguration coverage on it.
At 8pm, much of the station gathered in the galley to watch Obama’s inauguration and speech. At first there was a lot of talking and commotion, but by a minute into the speech, everyone was silent. I looked around and saw that everyone in the room was completely captivated, staring intently at the TV screens.
After 20 minutes of the stillest galley I’d ever seen, the speech was over. I was left with an overwhelming feeling of hope for our future. Here was someone who actually grasped the problems facing us and was willing to jump headfirst into trying to fix them. Looking around, it seemed that many others in the room shared my opinion. Here’s to hoping that we are right.
