Over the last weekend, I got a group of first-years together to bike out to Homer Lake and have a picnic. I picked the perfect day, the weather was great, the traffic was light, and everything was going well. Eight of us showed up to ride the 15 miles to the lake, but only six of us made it. Alex bent his front tire and his left wrist while trying to avoid another first year on our way out of the city. And then there were seven.
I cut a corner too fast through some gravel that I didn’t see and wiped out. I got a whole bunch of little scrapes, but nothing serious. And then there were six.
Alex and I drove out together to meet everyone at the lake, and the rest of the group arrived without further incident. The whole thing was a comedy of erros, but we had a good time. Another group of first-years drove out to meet us, and we had a good time laughing at the group trying to crew on this small lake.
In other news, I finally got a bed to sleep on. The first thing I did after installing it in my room was finish Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. He is quite an amazing author, and I plan on reading many more of his works. Then I fell asleep only to be woken up by a dream that would make any Japanese person proud, there were giant octopi, and whales, a candy store, and a plot that was intractably confusing.
