The weather has been beautiful almost the entire time I have been in Illinois, and I could no longer resist the temptation of the open roads. This morning I biked with another first-year out to Homer Lake, which I had been told was about 15 miles east of the Urbana. We got on our bikes and just headed east. We didn’t really know where we were going, yet we still got there just the same. Navigating here is so ridiculously easy! None of this 300 year old cow path Boston bird’s nest confusion.
We had a light breeze at our backs, so we made great time on the leg out. We practiced drafting on the return trip. It felt great to get out, check out the endless fields of corn, and pause from studying for the qual. Urbana’s largest event of the year, the Sweet Corn Festival, is currently going on. It is essentially a small fair on a blocked of square of the city. The target audience seems to be people with 8-year-old kids, a craving for butter drenched bags of corn, and boring, watered-down beer.
Tomorrow I enter action mode.

Mmmm…. cheap delicious sweet corn. Makes me homesick.
